Alien: Romulus Bursts Onto U.K., Ireland Box Office Charts, Dethrones It Ends With Us

Disney’s “Alien: Romulus” topped the U.K. and Ireland box office in its opening weekend, earning £3.7 million ($4.8 million), according to numbers from Comscore.

The sci-fi horror film unseated Sony’s “It Ends With Us,” which moved down to second place with £2.8 million in its sophomore frame, bringing its total to £11.3 million. Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” held strong in third place, adding £2.3 million in its fourth week for a cumulative gross of £48.4 million.

Trafalgar Releasing’s 15th anniversary re-release of “Coraline” opened at No. 4 with £1.2 million. Rounding out the top five, Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” continued to perform well in its sixth week, taking in £1.1 million for a total of £38.7 million.

Other films in the top 10 include Warner Bros.’ “Trap” at No. 6 (£558,233 weekend, £2.5 million total), Disney’s “Inside Out 2” holding at No. 7 (£506,524 weekend, £55.5 million total), Warner Bros. “Twisters” at No. 8 (£315,162 weekend, £12.9 million total) and Bakrania Media’s Bollywood horror-comedy “Stree 2” debuting at No. 9 with £291,804. “Borderlands” from Lionsgate U.K. earned £181,065 in its second weekend for a total of £1.4 million.

Looking ahead, the coming week sees Warner Bros.’ thriller “Blink Twice” directed by Zoë Kravitz and headlined by Channing Tatum, set for a wide release in over 300 locations, while Miracle/Dazzler brings animation “Noah’s Ark” to screens. Sony is opening comedy “Between the Temples,” starring Jason Schwartzman, Carol Kane and Dolly De Leon.

Entertainment Film Distributors is opening the modern re-imagining of 1994 cult classic, “The Crow,” while Universal is bowing Berlin-debuting horror-thriller “Cuckoo,” starring Hunter Schafer. ICA Cinema is releasing political documentary “Clandestina,” and from Vertigo comes champagne family drama “Widow Clicquot.”

Nostalgia fans can catch Sony’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” in a 2024 re-issue for one week only, as well as Paramount’s “Pulp Fiction” in a 30th Anniversary 4K re-release.

The indie film scene is equally busy, with releases planned for documentary “The Mountain Within Me” from Dogwoof, Ireland’s Oscar entry “Kneecap” from Curzon and drama “Cadejo Blanco” from Bulldog Film Distribution.

From India, Dreamz Entertainment is re-releasing megastar Chiranjeevi’s 2002 hit “Indra” on the occasion of his birthday on Aug. 22 and the distributor is also bowing Telugu-language comedy “Maruthi Nagar Subramanyam.”

Additionally, Trafalgar Releasing is opening K-pop concert film “Seventeen tour ‘Follow’ Again to Cinemas” on the Wednesday.
