Guitarist Gary Moore dies at 58

Musician was member of 'Thin Lizzy'

Guitarist Gary Moore, who did three tours of duty with the Irish rock band Thin Lizzy, was found dead Sunday in Spain. He was 58.

Moore’s manager Adam Parsons told the BBC that the musician died in a hotel in Estepona on the Costa Del Sol. The Spanish Interior Ministry is awaiting the outcome of an autopsy to determine if an investigation into the musician’s death is necessary.

Born in Belfast, Moore played with the Irish group Skid Row (not to be confused with the later American band of the same name) before joining its lead singer Phil Lynott’s new group Thin Lizzy in 1973.

He quickly departed the band after recording the album “Nightlife,” but Lynott remained an ardent supporter. Moore rejoined the band in 1979 for the album “Black Rose.” He also recorded in a duo with Lynott, issuing the singles “Parisienne Walkways” (1979) and “Out in the Fields” (1985).

Moore also recorded with bassist Greg Lake of King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer and with BBM, a trio featuring ex-Cream members Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker.

Best known as a blues interpreter, he recorded prolifically as a leader from the early ’80s on, releasing close to 30 solo albums.

Funeral details were not immediately available.
