Irne Joliot-Curie (Physicist and Chemist)

Profession: Physicist and Chemist

Biography: Irène Joliot-Curie was a distinguished French scientist who made significant contributions to the fields of chemistry and physics. She was the daughter of Marie and Pierre Curie, both Nobel laureates, and she continued her parents' pioneering work in radioactivity. Together with her husband, Frédéric Joliot, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935 for their discovery of artificial radioactivity, a significant milestone in nuclear science.

Joliot-Curie's scientific career began in earnest when she joined her mother's Radium Institute at the University of Paris. It was here that she met Frédéric Joliot, a fellow researcher, and they soon began collaborating on scientific experiments, marking the start of a lifelong partnership.

Their most significant discovery came in the 1930s when they bombarded boron, aluminium, and magnesium with alpha particles to create new radioactive elements. This marked the discovery of artificial radioactivity, a major advancement that allowed for the creation of radioactive isotopes, which have wide-ranging applications in medicine and industry.

In addition to her scientific work, Joliot-Curie held several significant positions in French scientific institutions. She served as her mother's successor as the director of the Radium Institute, and during World War II, she contributed to the French Resistance's efforts against the German occupation. Later, she held the position of Undersecretary of State for Scientific Research under the French government.
