Their most significant discovery came in the 1930s when they bombarded boron, aluminium, and magnesium with alpha particles to create new radioactive elements. In addition to her scientific work, Joliot-Curie held several significant positions in French scientific institutions. She served as her mother's successor as the director of the Radium Institute, and during World War II, she contributed to the French Resistance's efforts against the German occupation. Later, she held the position of Undersecretary of State for Scientific Research under the French government.
